It is sometimes said that Dickens week course

Invented Christmas.

This is not true. But in a Christmas carol (1843) he helped revive interest in the festive celebrations at a time when they were in abeyance.

More importantly, he recast them for a predominately urban population.

In doing so, he created a powerful parable which articulated his own sense of moral philosophy in an irresistibly entertaining tale. As well as looking carefully at the book, we shall look at it’s social context and Dicken’s other writings about Christmas. We shall also see howe the author himself celebrated Christmas. It was exhausting.
